Ground pork with tofu and shrimp (Mun Tahu) has been one of my favorite comfort foods since childhood. Every Chinese household has its own version of this dish, but the combination of silky tofu, savory ground pork, and shrimp always feels warm and comforting.
In Indonesia, this dish is known as Mun Tahu—Mun means braised, while Tahu means tofu. Made with tofu, ground pork, shrimp, and a light savory sauce, it’s a simple home-cooked meal that pairs perfectly with steamed rice.
I love ground pork recipes in Chinese cuisine because they are easy to make and incredibly satisfying. If you enjoy this dish, you may also like my Steamed Pork Patty or Chinese eggplant stir fry with ground pork, Pork and Broccoli Stir Fry, or Chicken mushroom stir fry with cauliflower.

Ingredient Notes
Tofu – Choose any tofu you like. Any tofu is good to go with this recipe. If you can find a grocery store that sells tofu on a wooden tray, get this one! This kind of tofu has a smokey taste in it, but this one is the softest of all tofu.
Ground pork – The best part of pork to choose is the shoulder part. It has enough fat to make the meat juicy. You can change pork to chicken if you like. Choose chicken thigh fillet, as it is more juicy.
Shrimps – peel the shrimps and devein them. You may soak them in baking soda water for 5 minutes and rinse them clean before using.
Oyster sauce – Add oyster sauce to give an umami flavor to the dish.
Fish sauce – I find that using fish sauce enhances the flavor of the shrimp even more. You can substitute with soy sauce if you prefer.
Cornstarch slurry – This will make the broth a little thicker and smooth.

How to Make Ground Pork with Tofu
STEP 1. Prepare the ingredients. Put the wok on the stove. Heat some cooking oil.

STEP 2. Toss in minced garlic (Image 1). Saute until it is golden brown and fragrant. Throw in the ground pork (Image 2). Stir fry until it changes color. Add the shrimps. Put in the tofu (Image 3).

STEP 3. Pour in oyster sauce, fish sauce, and mushroom powder. Stir to let the seasoning coat the ground pork and shrimps evenly (Image 4).
STEP 4. Pour in some water (Image 5). Add cornstarch slurry to thicken the broth (Images 6, 7). Let it simmer for a while until the broth thickens.
Pro Tips
- If you like the broth plain with no starch, you can omit the cornstarch slurry. Add one beaten egg at the end, pour in, and mix with spatula. This will thicken the broth without adding the starch.
- For extra heat, serve the dish with sliced fresh green chilies mixed with soy sauce. This simple chili-soy dipping sauce pairs beautifully with the mild tofu and savory pork.
- For a faster stir-fry, use homemade Chinese scallion oil—this way, you can skip mincing garlic at the start.
Serving Suggestions
Serve Mun Tahu with steamed rice for a simple and comforting meal. For a larger family-style spread, pair it with appetizers such as Meatballs, Shrimp balls, or Menbosha, and richer dishes like braised pork shank.
To add some fiber, pair it with some stir-fry vegetables like Green Bean Egg, or Green Bean Garlic, Pork Broccoli, or Chicken Mushroom Cauliflower.
The combination of ground pork, shrimp, and silky tofu makes this one of my favorite Chinese comfort food recipes.

Ground Pork Tofu FAQs
Mun Tahu is a Chinese-Indonesian tofu dish made with soft tofu simmered in a savory sauce, often with ground pork, shrimp, or chicken. The word “mun” refers to a braising or simmering cooking method, while “tahu” means tofu.
The best type of tofu is Chinese tofu that is very soft and tender.

Yes. It is suitable for children because of the tender tofu texture.
Yes, ground chicken is a great substitute for ground pork in this recipe. Choose the chicken thigh for more juicy option.
Yes, you can prepare this dish ahead of time. However, Chinese tofu tends to be watery. If it is too watery, add some cornstarch slurry to thicken it and reheat.

Storage
Store leftover ground pork tofu in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
To reheat, warm it gently in a saucepan over low heat until heated through. If the sauce has thickened too much after chilling, add a splash of water or chicken broth to loosen it. You can also microwave individual portions for 1–2 minutes.
This dish is best enjoyed fresh, as the tofu may release a little water during storage.

Notes
- If you use soft tofu, be careful when you stir fry it in the wok. Stir gently so the tofu doesn’t break into small pieces.
